Both a smectic and nematic mesophase are formed with the smectic much more energetic than in the C8 homolog. The expanded DSC trace is shown in Fig. 7. It is apparent that the nematic mesophase has a higher heat capacity than either the smectic or the isotropic liquid, which presented integration problems in the heat evaluation.
The data were collected and analyzed using on line data acquisition/reduction programs written for the IBM System/7-360/ 195. The solid to mesophase transition entropy was found to increase by the same amount per carbon number as the n-a1kanes. However, the absolute magnitude of the transition is larger by almost two carbon numbers than that expected from the corresponding paraffin. This four entropy unit (cal/mole/oK) offset is probably due to an increase in molecular dipole interactions caused by the alkoxy-bipheny1 linkage, which is supported by the thermal properties of p-n-a1ky1-p'- cyanobipheny1s.
