The data were collected and analyzed using on line data acquisition/reduction programs written for the IBM System/7-360/ 195. The solid to mesophase transition entropy was found to increase by the same amount per carbon number as the n-a1kanes. However, the absolute magnitude of the transition is larger by almost two carbon numbers than that expected from the corresponding paraffin. This four entropy unit (cal/mole/oK) offset is probably due to an increase in molecular dipole interactions caused by the alkoxy-bipheny1 linkage, which is supported by the thermal properties of p-n-a1ky1-p'- cyanobipheny1s.
