Re-Viewing British Cinema, 1900–1992 (Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 1994); Muriel Box, Odd Woman Out (London: Leslie Frewin, 1974). Danny BOYLE Few contemporary British film-makers have made a more dynamic impact on the cultural scene than Danny Boyle did with his second feature, Trainspotting (1996). The opening images of Ewan McGregor running full-tilt towards the audience to the pulsating musical accompaniment of Iggy Pop seemed to mirror the energy which Boyle and his team brought to a newly buoyant industry in the mid-1990s.

His inclination towards stylistic excess and metaphysical concerns has sometimes put him in conflict with an industry which has often preferred more conventional talents. Born in Shepperton on 18 January 1933, Boorman moved into television after an early career which included working as a film critic for magazines and radio. He joined the BBC as an assistant editor in 1955, working at their documentary unit in Bristol, and eventually became Head of Documentaries (1960–4), establishing a reputation for innovation.

Hope and Glory (1987) evokes another vanished world in its nostalgic vision of Boorman’s childhood growing up during the Blitz. The film’s tendency towards sentimentality is offset by its warmth and by Boorman’s eye for surreal detail. Between these two films he made the big budget international film The Emerald Forest (1985) which explores similar themes in its depiction of youthful innocence and the power of environment. Here the Amazonian rainforest replaces medieval England as a place of mystical enchantment.
