For example, one of the first projects will be a study in depth of the period of the 1930s, using Orwell’s work as a ‘key’. The second area – ‘the sociology of literature and the arts’ – will try to develop a critical language for dealing with those phenomena which have both artistic and social significance. Here the Centre will try to bring together the disciplines of literary criticism, sociology and social psychology, and social history. It will also be concerned with the nature of different audiences for different kinds of art and literature, with the relationship between different ‘kinds’ and ‘levels’ of art, and with the influences of communication upon audiences.

The range of groupings is already wide. In almost every case more than one person is involved, and we are prepared to be flexible about the degree of looseness permitted within each group. This must be allowed to grow and change with the shape of each project. One of the projects already mentioned – a ‘period’ study of the 1930s – will be a loosely-knit group, bringing together people of differing ages, with widely different interests, and different academic experience. This group includes two English specialists, one of whom is also a social anthropologist, several literary critics, a political historian and a biographer.

Grounded Studies’ are perhaps the hallmark of the CCCS and Johan Fornäs observes that intellectual fields emerge through labour. He reminds us how critical studies take hold and are shaped differently in different locations. In this section we can see that ‘practice’ becomes an important new analytical category through which to engage with theoretical debates about agency, ideology and structure. Whilst for organisational purposes these three levels have been separated out for this volume it is clear from reading the Working and Stencilled Papers and the Centre Reports that the work cross-fertilised.
