Sahelian merchants rejected silver as a currency but accepted it as a trade good to be melted down to make jewelry.
At a minimum, the hypothesis that the tontine did not exist in pre-colonial Dahomey deserves to be taken seriously. The absence of tontines would parallel that of other forms of private cooperation like secret societies for the suppression of theft and witchcraft, such as existed among the Yoruba. 118 This stunting of private cooperative institutions seems to be correlated with the strength of the monarchy, and may indeed be the result of conscious policy.
