The invention of gunpowder and other weapons signalled the eventual downfall of castle walls. As the walls came down, populations started to decentralize. Designers and planners were brought in to put order into the cities. New street patterns were created. The arts took on increased importance. Changes within the cities continued during the Renaissance and the Baroque periods.
