We have found that the mitogenic effects of Qa-2 specific antibodies are abrogated by low concentrations of Genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, whilst other routes of activation are unaffected. Also, mobilisation of a tyrosine kinase by anti-Thy-1 antibodies appears not to involve the antigen receptor directly because cell lines deficient in the entire receptor complex show specific phosphorylation of certain protein substrates (Hsi et al, 1989) . In resting T cells, proliferative and lymphokine responses require an additional mitogenic signal which can be delivered by activators of protein kinase C (PKC), such as phorbol myristate acetate (PMA).
