Nor is it obvious that any useful findings about the construction of meaning by eighteenth-century readers of Fielding’s muscular prose would not also help us to understand how, say, the historical narratives of William Robertson, or Thomas Reid’s moral philosophy, or any other contemporary Scottish work, were being construed by the same or similarly Page 18 positioned individuals. In fact, especially if it were sufficiently alive, as the reception theorists in particular have argued it should be, to the collaborations that occur between authors and communities of readers wherever sense and meaning are quite literally being made, an investigation of readers’ encounters with a group of texts such as the Scottish Enlightenment produced would potentially offer insights valuable not only to the wider history of reading but also—by virtue of its focus upon the unfolding relationship between certain sets of ideas and their eventual audiences—to the social history of ideas.

17 Yet it also has significant drawbacks. 20 An inevitable result of this, however, has been that it still remains unclear how far Scotland itself, beyond its three principal cities, was really capable of sustaining a large-scale cultural movement. 22 Yet arguably the most significant casualty of the producer-oriented approach to the study of enlightened Scottish culture has been the systematic under-exploitation of reception as a potential focus for further research. ’23 Certainly—and this is in many ways a measure of the extraordinary scale of the problem—one still looks in vain for any comprehensive account of the Scottish reception of the Scottish Enlightenment.
