Because the level of egg output is high (200 eggs/g feces per worm pair), a simple fecal smear is usually sufficient for diagnosis. However in light infections, a concentration procedure is recommended. Trichuriasis can also be diagnosed by identifying the worm itself on the mucosa of a prolapsed rectum or during colonoscopy. The female of the species is generally longer, while the male has a more rounded appearance. Because of the frequency of co-infections, a search for other protozoa, specifically Ascaris and hookworm should be considered.
