Example text

To what extent are the philosophies espoused in “maturity” actually sounder than those we may have entertained in our youth? Many people become more conservative as they grow older. They often claim that experience of life has taught them that what sounded idealistic in youth is impracticable, “doesn’t work” or “doesn’t take human nature into account”. On the other hand, young people often claim that the former idealism of their elders has been affected by growing vested interests or by “prudential considerations”.

So, presumably in exasperation, he sketched The Laws, which will be discussed below. For the present, it suffices to say that the use of force plays a very prominent part in that dialogue. In an ideal community, however, not only will there be no need for any force, there will also be no need to put any restraints on the powers of the Guardians, for that would be a confession of failure in their education. So there is no discussion in The Republic on the limits of the Guardians’ authority. The assumption is that in an ideal society the Guardians will deal with each occasion on its own merits.

Nothing in this ultimate Idea can be false or it would not be perfect. The Good is therefore the same as the True. For the same reason, nothing in the ultimate Idea can be ugly; and Beauty is therefore the same as Goodness and Truth. Goodness, Truth and Beauty are therefore, so to speak, Plato’s Trinity. It is interesting how often the idea of a trinity or a triad crops up in Philosophy. We find it in Plato; in Philo of Alexandria; in the Gospel of St John. Kant had an obsession that constantly makes him produce threefold classifications.
