It seems essential that I hold back, particularly when I become aware of powerful emotional reactions to the material the child produces, which I might be tempted to express in drawing without first reflecting on them. There are moments when a drawing can hurt as much as anything the therapist might say. A drawing can reject a child’s needs or even make them look ridiculous. It is also possible for a drawing to relate too directly to an inner conflict, or to represent an attempt to circumvent defences.

In all these cases, as with interpretations that seem to ask to be made, the recommended course of action is to exercise restraint and, circumstances permitting, choose a more neutral motif. In interviews I generally try to pay particular attention to what comes from the child, and above all try initially not to let my own themes flow into the pictures too much. However, looking back over a whole series of drawings with different patients, I see that it can’t be avoided completely. The therapist, too, has certain psychical, aesthetic and motor patterns which are part of his or her personality.

There are virtually no limitations or contra-indications for the use of the game. The only situation in which is not possible to conduct a squiggle interview is when a child refuses point-blank, which can occasionally happen.
