The captain made polite conversation with my father. He said that he was from Vienna and that the other soldier was a lieutenant from the Austrian Tyrol.
We tried to encourage him with exaggerations of good news. He was too ill to be burdened with the truth of our desperate situation. My mother had lost much weight but still looked beautiful. Her eyes revealed a fierce determination to get our family through each crisis. She asked us to carry her old foot-pedal sewing machine down from the attic. She tried to earn a little money sewing blouses and dresses for the Polish women in town. She could not compete with the established seamstresses in town, and after spending money on material and thread, she had little profit.
