Born into a po verty-stricken family in 1924, Baldwin w as the oldest of nine children. He developed a contentious relationship with his strict, religious f ather and sought w ays early in his youth to escape physically and emotionally . He stated later in life that he understood that he w as an intelligent young man. He spent much of his time in libraries immersed in books and realized that he had a passion for writing. Although Baldwin clashed with his f ather, he follo wed in his footsteps to become a preacher.
