LAUGHTER have to face, between their inadequate emotions and ruses and the chilling load of death. They are always juggling with an object too big for them, in a reaction of petty irritation or pathetic incredulity to find themselves in such a situation. The courage and the desperation of the weak interested Stevenson, their unexpected sticking-points and breaking-points; this was not one of Kipling's themes.
But these are all rationalizations of a personal distaste. Such blemishes diminish in the perspective of time and are taken with less perturbation, even where they are still disapproved.
