Many prisoners died in these disorganized first days; it was said a several thousand. But after about two weeks, the situation changed. We received material to build a system that provided us with water (there were a few “water towers” that tankers filled with water from the Rhine. The water was then disinfected with [a bit too much] chlorine, but it was certainly better than no water at all).
