Tolson summarises the appeal of Big Brother participants to viewers in the following terms: ‘contestants appear to be successful in so far as they offer an effective performance of “being themselves” which is understood in terms of moral “worthiness” by the Big Brother audience’ (2006: 169). As he points out, what is always at stake for Big Brother contestants is how to negotiate tensions between the interactional norms of the house, in terms of front-stage sociable engagement with others, and the risk of appearing two-faced, and therefore morally reprehensible, in more backstage moments like those afforded by the diary room.

I address each of these in turn below. Participation frameworks The formats of reality TV and makeover programmes are built around a specific range of participation frameworks and contextual patterns of interaction that, as noted above, differ substantially from the interactional formats of talk shows and phone-in discussions which were the focus of Chapter 2. In a show like Big Brother, participants interact primarily amongst themselves, apart from during some of the routine, and often ritualised, events that involve the participation of media professionals, such as when the participants first arrive at the house, during nominations and eviction nights and in the diary room talk sequences.

In some institutional contexts involving interactions between professionals and members of the public – doctor–patient or lawyer–witness, for example – it is often the institutional representative or professional who is in the position of asking the questions while the non-professional participant is called upon to answer them (Freed and Ehrlich 2010). In public participation broadcasts such as radio phone-ins and TV audience discussion programmes, this asymmetrical relationship is partially disrupted.
