Part of the recent history of professional road cycling is a series of large-scale doping scandals, which, starting with the Festina case in 1998, seriously damaged the image of the sport (doping in cycling will be discussed in detail in Chap. 13). This had considerable consequences for the development of its organization, since it drastically reduced the commercial potential of cycling, with diminishing spectators’ interest, many sponsors abandoning the sport and less coverage by the media.
