One day I was arguing the merits of economic freedom with my favorite math professor, a British socialist named Robert Coates. These conclusions, at least, were what the principle of freedom implied. But I still had no idea how practical these ideas were. I was 17 and I had no basis in experience or in the modest amount I had read for judging how workable a free society was. I noticed something interesting about the discussions and arguments I was starting to have with professors, fellow students, and people generally: I would start by advocating freedom, and within two rounds of the debate, their problems with freedom came down to whether it would work.
