But Janet did not fully develop this insight. His training under Charcot, his exposure to such a mass of pathological material, urged upon him the neverending task of classification, typification and characterisation, as a task of greater significance than was diagnostic analysis. The result was a comprehensive exposition of the entire range of hysterical symptoms systematised from a physiological standpoint. But his central insight was to undermine just such a point of view. The ‘body’ of the hysteric was a ‘fixed idea’; a representation or image which bore a direct relation to popular ideas about the body, and had little to do with the carefully organised chapters and subheadings of an anatomical text.
