What with these explorations, examination of memorial tablets, and listening to the great organ and the choir, many were the hours I whiled away there. But it was singing in the school chapel choir that provided the greatest pleasure during my time at Winchester. The chapel itself was a glorious structure, the organ good, and the choirmasters unexcelled. In my time, they were George Dyson, later president of the Royal College of Music; then Sidney Watson, who would move on to New College, Oxford; and Robert Irving, whose flouting of convention by wearing green suede shoes and blue-framed glasses which set off his red hair I much admired—as I did for his having once played variations on the Rhapsody in Blue as an organ voluntary in chapel.

Really there was no hope of catching up; for one thing, the kind of mathematics required was far beyond my grasp. If I’d been more mature I would just have left Cambridge and enrolled in one of the military services. After all, there was a war on—one just then at a desperate juncture. In retrospect I feel ashamed of my failure to do so, while taking just a little comfort from the fact that I did absorb a good knowledge of a subject that would prove militarily useful—electronics. A topic that had engaged my interest while still at Winchester, and now even more at Cambridge, was the reproduction of recorded music.

Before the war, this establishment had been a Butlin’s Holiday Camp, the mid-thirties creation of a Canadian entrepreneur, Billy Butlin, who built several of these “camps” to provide inexpensive holidays with healthy fun and games by the seaside for working folk and their families. But according to rumor, the site of this camp had been reclaimed from the North Sea—as was easy to believe on arrival there in early November, with soggy ground under our feet. There were four enormous buildings, the size of aircraft hangars, named Windsor, York, Gloucester, and Kent in honor of the Royal Dukes.
