The fact that students underrate paraphrases m a y stem from the idea that text analysis and translation are two distinctly separate phases and activities. This is obviously not the case. It could be seen from our protocols that the phase of understanding the source text is linked up with the phase of producing the translation via paraphrasing. There is thus a close interaction between analytic and productive activities. A s far as meaning and comprehension are concerned, I believe that source text analysis and target-text recasting should not be taught as two distinctly separate phases.
