Spinal’ cats walk (supported) on a treadmill with a nearly normal stepping pattern. If their limbs come into contact with an obstacle they display a ‘stumble corrective reaction’, allowing their limbs to clear the obstacle (Grillner and Shik 1973; Forssberg 1985; Rossignol et al. 1988). 5 Their motor patterns are generated within these structures and modulated by sensory inputs. However, a ‘fusional oceanic merging’ possibly never subsists in the human fetus. Twins react to each other’s blows almost from the beginning.

This will be dealt with separately in the next chapter. Underlying many twin studies is the common assumption of a totally shared and completely identical intrauterine environment. The macroscopic effects of environmental variations cannot be denied, as in the case of the differences in birthweight affecting the majority of twins. However, behavioral consequences are scarcely considered and are thought to be ‘washed away’, leaving intrinsic pre-programmed drives free to emerge again in all their true power in later life.

Besides psychological implications, however, correct assessment of zygosity is significant for another reason. Should one of the twins need an organ or a tissue transplant in later life, a monozygotic co-twin would be the ideal donor. A transplant of tissues between monozygotic twins (a so-called isograft) would not be subject to the manifold problems of rejection that all the rest of us ‘allografts’ can undergo (Sumethkul et al. 1994). However, the prenatal assessment of placentation, chorionicity and amnionicity is first and foremost of primary and immediate clinical concern (Fisk and Bryan 1993).
