A running theme in Dewey’s work is that social inquiry needs a revolution in method akin to the one that physical science underwent during the last few centuries. The scientific temper may have had success in the natural world, but the study of humankind is severely lacking. One sign of the immaturity of social inquiry is that its subject-matter is so fractured. Politics, art, economics, and jurisprudence are assigned to separate disciplines, each with its own methods and assumptions. When inquirers do not recognize that the varied facets of associated life are connected, then they cut off the means to alleviate the underlying conflicts.

If pragmatism does not address basic structures and cultural conflicts, then it faces what West calls the “political critique of pragmatism”—that it has an “inadequate grasp of the complex operations of power, principally owing to a reluctance to take traditions of historical sociology and social theory seriously” (West 1999, 278; 1993, 135). It would be a tragic irony if pragmatism turns us toward culture only to have nothing compelling to say about it. However, Dewey affirmed the need for a critical theory and gives it explicit direction—it must come to grasp the meaning and conditions of modernity.

Now security depends upon some measure of control over environing conditions. The crises in which the event of failure or success was precarious and action was perilous, were numerous and compelling in early life. It might be a matter of illness or wound, of child-birth or death, of the catamenial flow of women, of war with a hostile group, of a swift current where rocks beset the frail canoe, a hunt, obtaining an adequate harvest, of achieving honor and respect among fellow men. Moreover, the tools and techniques of the matter of fact arts were so undeveloped, so much at the mercy of untoward forces which they did not control, that even they had to be buttressed by association with the “supernatural” to guarantee their issue.
