Most expert systems are designed to be used in a consultative manner by a non-expert in order to perform a task requiring expertise. The idea of using the same knowledge base in a tutoring role is very attractive. This approach has been adopted in the GUIDON system (Clancey, 1978) where the knowledge base from the HYCIN medical consultation system was used in a tutoring system. The implementation of GUIDON was difficult because the knowledge base needed to be augmented by rules that described the logical connections between rules in the knowledge base.
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, we would like to discuss some Navy-sponsored research and development work in Computer-based Instl"Uction (CBI) where the aim is to add "intelligence" to the CBI, and second, to describe one such system. The military services have to train large numbers of people to perform a wide variety of somewhat specialized jobs, and to this process, they devote considerable resources and personnel. It is little wonder that technical developments that offer to make instl"Uction better or more efficient have generated a great deal of interest.
Not only is this seen as a way of capturing the knowledge base in the expert system for training purposes, but intelligent tutoring systems are also one way whereby operational staff can observe the performance of an expert system. Originally the subject to be taught corresponded to a domain in which we already had an expert system shell and knowledge base. However, for operational reasons, a different domain, with similar characteristics, was chosen, and the knowledge base for the new domain prepared specifically to fit the expert system shell.
