Regrettably, Dunbar’s realism of African American life is overshadowed by his audiences’ desire to be entertained by the familiar sketches of the plantation tradition. In his own reflections of this turn of events in his career in “The Poet,” Dunbar laments that while “he sang of life/ serenely sweet,/ With, now and then, a deeper note,” (Stanza 1, lines1–2) his audience preferred “A jingle in a broken tongue” (Stanza 2, lines 8).
