(Sue, 11 years) Children are acutely conscious of the differences they experience because of social inequality, though they make informed choices within the constraints of their lives. Sometimes low-income children talk positively about being poor, for example, that they have everything they want and are close to their family and friends.
I will not cover this research in detail here but, in summary, it shows that parental use of physical punishment is associated with the f ollowing outcomes for children: increased aggression and antisocial behavior; poorer academic achievement; poorer quality parent–child relationships (attachment); adverse mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem); and diminished moral internalization (children’s i nternalization of parental values and ability to control their own b ehavior).
These declarations were n onbinding moral statements of normative standards, but they were useful preparation of principles that fed in to the development of the UNCRC. This binding convention was developed and negotiated by an international UN Working Group from 1979, and passed by the General Assembly in 1989.
