Further defeats during 1 905 made the government and TSar look even weaker and gave encouragement to the revolutionaries. The son of a wealthy farmer, Gapon became a priest after being widowed in 1 898. He then moved to St Petersburg, where he preached in workers' districts and ran i nto tro ub le with the Church authorities over his drinking and gambling. He organ ised the Assembly of Russian Factory and Mill Workers o f S t Petersburg , w h i c h existed t o defend workers' rights and to improve their religious status.
The loss o f agricultural workers and horses to the army put a great strain on the production of food. This, combfned with the takeover of railway lines by the army, led to food shortages in towns and cities. Moscow, for example, had been receiving 2200 railway wagons of grain per month in 1 91 4 . But by Christmas 1 91 6 this figure was down to around 300 wagons. As a result, the Russian Home Front faced a major economic crisis for the winter of 1 91 6- 1 91 7 . The huge loss of life and military humiliations also undermined domestic support for the war.
While countries like Britain and France concentrated on Africa, Russia attempted to expand its control over the Far East. In doing so, it came into direct conflict with another expansionist power, Japan . From 1 904 to 1 905 Russia and Japan went to war over control of northern China and Korea. Although the Russians saw themselves as far superior in military power, they suffered a humiliating defeat. In January 1 905 the Russians were forced to surrender their Port Arthur naval base in north China, and in the following n1onths Japanese forces defeated the Russian army in Manchuria.
