When temperatures near the ground are colder than the air a few hundred feet higher, a surface inversion exists. Sometimes the atmosphere is arranged in several layers and an upper air inversion is formed. No matter where it is located a temperature inversion creates a lid, which stops vertical mixing. At equal pressure, the same volume of warm air is lighter than cool air, and when air near the ground is heated by the sun during the daytime, it becomes warmer and lighter than the air immediately above it.
Relative humidity is the relationship of water vapor pressure present in the air to water vapor pressure possible at the same temperature under saturated conditions. The dew point is the temperature at which air can exist saturated with water vapor. Below the dew point condensation occurs. The dew point can be determined by water saturation tables and psychometric charts.
