For example, I might feel that a parent is mismatching by always immediately copying her child’s musical interactions. However, the parent may not be strong enough to be criticised in any way but may be able to pick up subtly different ways of interacting musically with the child from watching my ways of interacting. Five short case studies I will now present five short case studies of music therapy with pre-school children with autistic spectrum disorder.

It should also be apparent that a lot of my work involves working closely with parents and that I use my clarinet in almost all my sessions. I hope that it is already clear how very much I enjoy my work and how completely absorbing and fascinating the process of interacting with children through improvised music making can be. In the next chapters I will describe my music therapy approach in specific clinical situations. I hope that this may be useful to other people working or interacting with these client groups.
