Evolutionary epistemologists focus on the things we must get right in order to survive; Nietzschean thinkers (and there have been many twentieth-century examples) focus on the things that, in view of the central role of beliefs in ensuring survival, we are likely to get wrong, for example our place in the great order of things. At any rate, there are several problems with the extreme Nietzschean version of evolutionary epistemology according to which human knowledge is not merely inseparable from error but is drowned in it.
There is good reason, therefore, for thinking of them as theoretic entities, as constructs. The correspondence between their being predicted by the theory and their being shown to exist is, arguably, not a correspondence at all; rather, it is an instance of coherence between one part of physical theory and another. This is not an entirely eccentric interpretation. On the contrary, it is very much in line with the present overall ambition of physics, which is to arrive at a Grand Unified Theory.
