When I have experienced the supervisor inviting the supervisee and group to step across this time (or other) boundary I have noticed a profound shift in the supervisory relationship. In one example, a shift in timing allowed a shame issue to be explored more fully. It made conscious the need of the supervisee to feel special and her desire for others in the group to collude with her shame. In a way she was inviting the group to ‘feel bad about her’ keeping them from their coffee. It allowed the group to address its unspoken resentment in feeling manipulated that the supervisee had been holding for them.
I have already mentioned the importance of education and support in supervision and this is well catered for, although there are still too many groups of health professionals where even this is not adequately or routinely provided. However, the developmental and transformative role, beyond the mere sequential addition of facts or experience, is key to staying a vibrant, healthy, well-developed practitioner. I suspect it is at times overlooked or avoided because supervisees choose ‘not to go there’ or supervisors prefer to keep to what they know.
For example, in group supervision I remember a participant who had reoccurring issues about relationships with patients. She had had major 53 Passionate Supervision illness herself (breast cancer) and as a child had a traumatic relationship with her parents, especially her mother, that had never been resolved. In a group setting she seemed unable to explore her need, but rather required unconditional support and ‘holding’ by the group. Up to a point the group could provide this but after a time the group wanted to move beyond it.
