One cannot replace the missing choice of Kim by an ordeal of the lama. It is not his love for Kim that provides the crisis. The tension in that has been wholly relaxed since he has accepted his chela as the medium of his Search and the beneficiary of its achievement. His spiritual anguish, like his serenity, are things that Kim comes to know about, that bring him to maturity. The tale presses no further into these regions than the travellers did into the Himalayas. The great heights are beyond.

The dealings with this human residuum have an engaging innocence, which must be ascribed to the junior partner, but at least it is understood that such things are heavy. 2. LAUGHTER have to face, between their inadequate emotions and ruses and the chilling load of death. They are always juggling with an object too big for them, in a reaction of petty irritation or pathetic incredulity to find themselves in such a situation. The courage and the desperation of the weak interested Stevenson, their unexpected sticking-points and breaking-points; this was not one of Kipling's themes.

But these are all rationalizations of a personal distaste. Such blemishes diminish in the perspective of time and are taken with less perturbation, even where they are still disapproved.
