In the Phaedrus Plato alerts us to the importance of the body as an initial prompt toward spiritual flight. He has Socrates explain in his second speech how physical love (or love of physical beauty) can serve to arouse our passions toward the higher and more spiritual love of truth. “When a man sees beauty in this world and has remembrance of true beauty, he begins to grow wings” (Phaedrus 249). Plato’s discussion of how we grow wings is entirely sensual: when a man recently initiated, who has looked upon many of the great realities, sees a god-like countenance or physical form the beauty of which is a faithful imitation of true beauty, a shudder runs through him… As he gazes there comes over him a reaction from the shudder, an unusual fever and perspiration.

According to Pausanias: There can be no doubt of the common nature of the love which goes with Common Aphrodite; it is quite random in the effects which it produces, and it is this love which the baser sort of men feel. Its marks are, first that it is directed towards women quite as much as young men; second, that in either case it is physical rather than spiritual; third, that it prefers that its objects should be as unintelligent as possible, because its only aim is the satisfaction of its desires, and it takes no account of the manner in which this is achieved… In all this it partakes of the nature of its corresponding goddess, who is far younger than her heavenly counterpart, and who owes her birth to the conjunction of male and female.
