Now a series of literary units may be classified into a Gattung when they have a number of common characteristics. The pericopes in the book contain questioning, stating and admonishing reflections wherein the types enumerated in the preceding paragraphs are used. The structure of the pericope can be mapped as follows: 1 A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of birth. 2 It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for that is the end of every human, and the living should take it to heart. 3 Grief is better than laughter, for when the face is sad it is well with the heart. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools in the house of merriment.

6. The dismal opposite of wisdom is stressed by a fine pun. Firstly, the polysemy of sir is exploited ("pot" and "thorn"), and secondly, the alliteration of the sibilant (sirim, sir, s'hoq, k'sil) draws attention to the negative evaluation of folly. Podechard considers v. 7 to be a gloss, Hertzberg removes it to another context, and Delitzsch cannot see any relation between v. 7 and s-6. ki is no problem here, for its conjunctive function need not be causal. Neither do the contents present a difficulty, because " .
