Asking whether the book does indeed ‘highlight a single message above others in the presentation of the Hauser Introduction and Overview 33 prophet Isaiah’, Sheppard responds by focusing on the theme ‘fear not’, which Sheppard argues is not so much a theme as ‘a historical message unleashed upon generation after generation of audiences’, which ‘becomes distinctive of the message of Isaiah at every level of the biblical text’ (Melugin 2008: 192-93; summarizing and quoting Sheppard 1996b: 274).
