Some inferences are necessary parts of understanding a text. Oakhill and Garnham (1988: 21–2) quote a children’s story: Jane was invited to Jack’s birthday party. She wondered if he would like a kite. She went to her room and shook her piggy bank. It made no sound. Jane frowned. This only makes sense in the light of knowledge about birthday parties, birthday presents, buying things with money, saving money in piggy banks, and so forth. Without it Jane’s musings and her actions would be completely incomprehensible.

As children experience written language by being read to (or reading for themselves), they learn that ‘writing’ consists of particular sorts of patterns arranged on the page in particular orientations, in English, horizontal lines from left to right of the twenty-six letters of the alphabet. Young children may ‘write’ in a scribble or string of letters running horizontally across the page, or accompanying a picture as an adult might produce a caption. Kamler and Kilarr (1983: 187–9; see also Meadows 1986: 89–91) provide a fascinating observation of a child just under 5 as she composes a ‘story’ to accompany a picture.
