Does metacognition, i.e. the skill to shape epistemic self-evaluations approximately one's present cognitive functionality, derive from a mindreading potential, or does it depend, at the least partly, on sui generis informational tactics? In The Philosophy of Metacognition Joëlle Proust offers a robust protection of the second one place. Drawing on discussions of empirical proof from comparative, developmental, and experimental psychology, in addition to from neuroscience, and on conceptual analyses, she purports to teach that, against this with analytic metacognition, procedural metacognition doesn't have to contain metarepresentations. Procedural metacognition seems to be had to a couple non-humans (some primates and rodents). Proust extra claims that metacognition is basically regarding psychological organisation, i.e. cognitive keep watch over and tracking. "Self-probing" is corresponding to a self-addressed query in regards to the feasibility of a psychological motion ('Am I in a position to take note this word?'). "Post-evaluating" is a fashion of asking oneself even if a given psychological motion has been effectively accomplished "'Is this be aware the single i used to be having a look for?"). Neither query want be articulated conceptually for a sense of realizing or of being correct to be generated, or to force epistemic keep watch over. a variety of concerns raised by means of the distinction of a procedural, experience-based metacognition, with an analytic, concept-based metacognition are explored, reminiscent of even if each one is expressed in a unique representational layout, their sensitivity to varied epistemic norms, and the life of a number of forms of epistemic attractiveness.

To show what is special about metacognitive context-sensitivity, one needs to contrast it with the other forms of context-sensitivity that make adaptive control possible. Context is relevant to timely cognitive decision along three different dimensions of variation: instrumental, the specific courses of actions to be taken, strategic, the risks and benefits involved, and metacognitive, the informational quality of the cognitive processes available. These three kinds of variation call for three kinds of flexibility, in other words, of sensitivity to the present or expected inner and outer situation (its represented characteristics and affordances).

The receiver may move her decision criterion in a strict way (to the right) or in a lenient way (to the left) depending on the respective consequences of a false positive or of a false negative. the respective returns and costs of a correct or mistaken decision to act, depending on the outputs from detection and categorization. A third dimension of context-sensitivity, metacognitive monitoring, can be used to prevent the most costly forms of error that the two other types of contextual information jointly make possible.
