1 Emotional intelligence is the most recent ‘take’ on an ancient philosophical debate about the place of emotion and reason in human affairs. Emotions do not simply fire-off without rhyme or reason (although they sometimes feel as though they do); they shape our thoughts and directions and, without them, our thoughts would have no shape or direction. Emotional intelligence grasps this connection to explore how emotions can be used ‘intelligently’ in daily life and work settings. It is relatively easy, for instance, to get annoyed with people.

The ‘correct’ feelings will, like emotion display-rules, be culturally specific. For example, beating an opponent in a competition should result in feelings of pride in many Western settings, but humility in some Asian cultures. The socially correct feeling is further reinforced when others remind us what we ‘ought’ to be experiencing in a particular circumstance – ‘You surely must feel so . . (happy, sad, and so forth)’. Of course, we do not always feel what we are supposed to feel because our feelings connect with our own personal interpretation of events.
