WIJERS The war diary of the Russian 62nd Army describes the battle for the command post of the 339th Rifle Regiment in the Red Barricade factory: “The command post of the 339th Rifle Regiment was in the main office of the Red Barricade factory. This building had been strongly fortified. Trenches to protect from splinters and cellars with fixed roofs had been used. A group of eighteen men was detached to defend the strong-point, and a commander who had worked out a plan of attack was appointed. “On October 26, the enemy broke through in the area of the 2nd Battalion of the 650th Regiment (of the 138th Rifle Division) and started to spread out in a southerly direction.

Company commander Leutnant Joachim Stempel (103rd Panzer Grenadier Regiment, 14th Panzer Division) describes the fighting: “Now our division with its units has again been into action with the city as the focus of our attacks. The fight for this industrial center and the surrounding housing blocks is difficult and exhausting. We have to contend with unbelievable losses here! The days on Lake Zaza with the Romanians are well behind us now. Now the great struggle for the city center has begun. The resistance here is determined and led in a fanatical manner.

There in six months, over half a million German and French soldiers were killed. Joachim Stempel. “‘Each soldier a fortress. Behind the Volga there is no land anymore for us. ’ With these slogans, the commander of the Soviet 62nd Army, General Chuikov, whips up a fanatical fighting mood. They are brought up, some even by air!
