The fledgling national security state thus emerged incrementally and somewhat messily, the product of geopolitical imperatives filtered by domestic politics and antistatist impulses. By the early 1950s the principal components of today’s national security state were largely in place, actively harnessing the nation’s scientific and technical resources for the purpose of military preparedness.
