Example text

A challenge for the next two chapters is to introduce conditions that are in fact sufficient for a representational system to be pictorial. Two examples have stood the test of time as challenges to explaining depiction and they apply particularly well to Goodman’s view. One is due to Richard Wollheim (1980). Consider a picture scheme like linear perspective, say, except for the fact that the pictures in linear perspective are broken up into many pieces and reshuffled according to some rule. This system is semantically and syntactically dense, and just as replete as more familiar picture systems, but it is a mess indeed.

There are also many intuitions concerning which representational systems are paradigmatic examples of pictorial ones 42 image structure and which are not, which are quite realistic and which are not, and so on. The foregoing conditions do not address these topics at all, so the work done so far has left a gap in our understanding of pictorial representation, and no account of pictures should leave such an obvious gap. That being said, one appealing direction in which to proceed is to claim that facts about us—about the ways our eyes and brains work, for example—contribute to determining which representational systems are pictorial.

The idea is to present enough detail to make Goodman’s proposals, and the subsequent criticisms of them, make sense. There will be occasions throughout Part I for reflecting on how best to understand the structure of a representational system. The next two sections lay out the three conditions that Goodman thought were necessary, though not jointly sufficient, for a representational system to be pictorial. Differentiation and Density The three structural features characteristic of pictures according to Goodman are syntactic density, semantic density, and relative repleteness.
